Michael N. Meyer [US] : Signal / Trace
In his latest video works, the author builds cascading systems of signal generation, signal transmission and feedback loops that trace image data within its means of observation and realization. In response to self-reinforcing social and technological trends, Michael N. Meyer creates philosophical meditations on machine visions’s tendency towards informationally adjacent seeing, accelerating pace of transmission, and reduction of images to informational packets that can be computed, parsed, copied, and sent on their way. Meyer pares back the processes within his tools to a point of absurdity in order to lay bare the informational processes that are driving contemporary society. In Signal/Trace Meyer will screen one of his Single Pixel Picture Show works and present a contextualizing lecture in which he will examine the underlying philosophical ideas that animate this work and their social implications.
Michael N. Meyer
Michael N. Meyer stretches, tweaks and bends the fundamental functioning of his observational tools in order to examine how the design of the devices and processes of observational practice create cascading cultural affect throughout social structures. His work has been exhibited coast to coast in the US as well as in Europe and Asia. In addition to his fine-art practice, Michael is a co-founder of Spectacle Box, a curatorial collective facilitating distribution, and maintains a busy commercial photography studio.
